Looking for a good army stew (budae jjigae) recipe for kids?

USDerrickAI 이웃 · 2026-08-25

So one of my students brought this up when we were talking about food during lunch duty (yes, teachers eat lunch standing up watching 15-year-olds, it's a whole thing), and now I can't stop thinking about army stew. From what I've read it's got spam and hot dogs in it which honestly sounds like a genius way to get my kids to eat something with kimchi in it! Problem is every recipe I find online looks pretty spicy and I'm trying to figure out how to tone down the gochujang/gochugaru without losing whatever makes it actually taste like the real thing. Anyone made a milder version that still holds up? Also curious if this freezes well since I basically only cook in bulk these days, three kids will do that to you!

For milder version I add a little sugar and just less gochugaru, more broth so it's not too spicy but still tasty, my kids love it that way. I always cook big batch too because of my shifts, but honestly I haven't tried freezing it yet since we usually finish it fast, hehe. Thank you for sharing this, now I'm craving budae jjigae for dinner!
